BT8x8 Tweaker

This option in VirtualDub / VirtualdubMod allows fine adjusting of picture size and position by capturing, plus some other advanced settings. To get it work, you need to download an older version of DSCaler, what was named DTV. Version 2.12 will be fine. You may find it here: http:/cesnet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/deinterlace/dTV212exe.zip. Extract only dtvdrv.dll, dTVdrv95.vxd and dTVdrvNT.sys to the VirtualDub directory.

After setting up the capture settings, go to the Video-tab and select "BT8x8 Tweaker". Move its window to right bottom and don't close until finish capturing. Switch to preview mode, because the setting aren't the same as in Overlay mode. With sliders named Left border and Right border you may stretch that picture horizontally to fit it exactly - removing the black bars on the left and right (1) (make sure the crop is mod16, and left - and right cropping must be even). Vertical adjust is little different - it can't stretch image vertically, it just shifts it with the slider Top border. But it is very useful by capturing from VHS. Shifting picture down, and cut bottom instable part can assure much better syncronisation and less dropped frames. Be careful with vertical slide, it can reverse field order, what is visible by flicker on picture, so adjust it very accurate. Because VirtualDub will undo all settings of tweaker, you need to set them back with the Reassert button. It is required after adjusting video properties etc. Always click on Reassert after starting capture.

Of course, this tweaker works only with capture cards based on BT8x8 chips. For example: Pinnacle (Miro), Hauppauge, many VIVO cards (not ATI).

Footnote:
(1): If you decide to crop some pixels horizontally (a multiple of 16), be aware that your clip is not 4:3 anymore. This implies that you have to make use of the corresponding par's to resize the clip. If you captured at 720x576 for example, and you want to crop 16 pixels (from the left, right or both): look up the corresponding par given in 1.3.3 Capture Resolution: PAL/NTSC, which is 48/45 for PAL. Using FitCD with ITU unchecked (and selecting "Destination: 1:1 Monitor" for encoding to DivX/XviD), it can be seen that the final resolution must be 672x512 (or a scaling of this).
